Exemplary Women in the Holy Qur’an

Asma bint Omays, Ja’far ibn Abu-Talib’s wife, was among the first Mohajer (migrant) women in Islam. When she returned from Abyssinia (Ethiopia), she went to Prophet Muhammad’s [SAW] wives and asked them if there were any verse in Qur’an about women’s virtue. Their answer was negative. Asma became sad and went to Prophet Muhammad (SAW). “O’ Messenger of Allah, women suffer from loss.” she said. “Why are you saying this?” Prophet Muhammad (SAW) asked. “Because there is no virtue for women in Qur’an as there is for men”, she said. At this moment a verse descended which included all complete attributes for Muslim men and women, 1

Surely the men who submit and the women who submit and the believing men and the believing women and the obeying men and the obeying women and the truthful men and the truthful women and the patient men and the patient women and the humble men and the humble women and the almsgiving men and the almsgiving women and the fasting men and the fasting women and the men who guard their private parts and the women who guard and the men who remember Allah much and the women who remember –Allah has prepared for them forgiveness and a mighty reward.” 2

God has reminded us ten attributes from perfect attributes in this verse and has stated five other ones in the fifth verse of Tahrim Surah in Qur’an,

Submissive, faithful, obedient, penitent, adorers and fasters.”

God has also stated other attributes of perfect women in 34th verse of an-Nisa Surah,

Obedient, guarding the unseen as Allah has guarded.”

Noticing these verses, we find out that women can achieve high humane and moral attributes as well as men. Not only does the Holy Qur’an put any difference between man and woman in achieving spiritual attributes but also introduces patterns to guide women.

The Holy Qur’an gives some examples like Hazrat Fatima (AS), Mary and Asiya and so on, who are perfect women and through this teaches other women to take use of their innate talents and improve them by following the patterns.
